ASM Statement on the 2024 U.S. Election
One of ASM’s core principles and activities is that of advocating for evidence-based policies that promote and support the microbial sciences. In addition, as is stated in ASM’s strategic road map, “ASM embraces the responsibility to support all microbial scientists and stakeholders globally, leveraging fundamental and applied science to create a positive impact for life on and sustainability of our planet.” All this is true, regardless of the outcome of the U.S. elections.
While we are still awaiting the outcome of some key races, ASM stands ready to work with the incoming Administration and Congress and will continue its strong work to advocate for our field.
ASM has a critical role to play as a trusted source of information for policymakers. That requires engaging with all branches of government to ensure the advancement of the microbial sciences and all science, regardless of the challenges presented by the fiscal and political environment.
We are also acutely aware of the global nature of science, which knows no borders. Addressing the most pressing global public health threats of our time requires us to continue our work with leaders and organizations from across the globe, forging partnerships to combat threats like antimicrobial resistance and climate change.
ASM’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the STEM community is unwavering. We believe that inclusive science enhances innovation, broadens the health research agenda and furthers scientific advancement. ASM is committed to addressing systemic inequities across the globe, in the microbial sciences and beyond. We know that complex scientific problems can better be solved by harnessing diversity, tapping different perspectives, training, cultural backgrounds and experiences.
