Judith N. Steenbergen, Ph.D., is the president and founder of Scientific and Medical Affairs Consulting (SMAC). She is an accomplished pharmaceutical executive with more than 20 years of experience in the infectious diseases space, spanning the entire development spectrum from pre-clinical study design and data generation through clinical development, regulatory approval and post-marketing medical sciences. She has expertise in designing and implementing clinical microbiology programs required to support IND and NDA submissions. She also provides science and microbiology expertise for competitive intelligence and due diligence reviews of new chemical entities and products. 

In addition to her microbiology expertise, she also provides strategic scientific and medical affairs consulting to small biotechnology companies, focusing on medical affairs function planning and budgeting, in alignment with company goals and in collaboration with key internal stakeholders. Steenbergen specializes in global scientific strategies, including scientific platform development, publication planning, data gap analysis and lexicon development. Additionally, she brings a core capability of thought leader identification, engagement and advisory board planning, content development and execution.

Steenbergen received her B.A. in microbiology and chemistry from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and her Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y.
