Michael J. Schurr, Ph.D.

Michael J. Schurr earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Texas (Molecular Biology, 1992), studying pyrimidine metabolism in Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa). His postdoctoral training occurred at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and he identified mechanisms for Pa conversion to the mucoid phenotype, commonly found in cystic fibrosis Pa isolates.
He joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School (1996) as a research assistant professor and worked on the regulation of Pa mucoid phenotype studying a 2-component regulatory system, AlgZR, that has proven to be a global regulator for virulence. He joined the faculty at Tulane Medical School (1998) and relocated to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CUAMC, 2006). His research team focuses on Pa regulation of virulence to identify potential therapeutic targets for this opportunistic pathogen.
He has served on NIH bacterial pathogenesis grant review panels since 2006. He serves on the editorial boards of Infection & Immunity, Journal of Bacteriology and Frontiers in Cellular and Infection °®¶¹´«Ã½. The Schurr laboratory is and has been supported by CUAMC SPARK Translational Research Program, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
