Miriam Markum, Ph.D., is an ssociate professor of teaching in the °®¶¹´«Ã½ and Molecular Genetics Department at the University of California, Davis. Markum earned her B.A. at the University of Oregon and her Ph.D. at Indiana University, Bloomington. She has performed research on bacteria with a variety of fascinating lifestyles, including thermophilic Synechococcus, differentiating Caulobacter, photosynthetic Nostoc and pathogenic Helicobacter.
She has also taught at both the university and community college level using evidence-based practices, with the goal of providing an effective, inclusive and accessible learning experience. She currently teaches high-enrollment, upper-division laboratory and lecture courses, as well as Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) courses in education research. Her scholarly activity is focused on the implementation and assessment of student-centered instructional practices, such as teaching with undergraduate learning assistants and collaborative exams.
