Rachel Mackelprang, Ph.D., earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in genetics at the University of Washington. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Computational Biology at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) with Eddy Rubin, Ph.D., and Janet Jansson, Ph.D. She is currently a professor of microbiology at California State University Northridge. Mackelprang was trained in human population genomics but changed her focus to microbial genomics and environmental microbiology during her postdoctoral fellowship. Her research lab focuses on microbial communities living in permafrost and other extreme environments from the perspective of climate change and exobiology. She is also extensively involved in NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return efforts.
