ASM Joins with 52 Organizations to Launch Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM

Feb. 20, 2019

°®¶¹´«Ã½ (ASM) and 52 other leading academic and professional societies announced the creation of the Societies Consortium on Sexual Harassment in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine) at a panel discussion during the AAAS Annual Meeting on February 15, 2019.

“ASM is committed to promoting an environment that allows the free expression and exchange of scientific ideas and promotes equal opportunities and respectful treatment for all,” said Stefano Bertuzzi, CEO of ASM. “Scientific societies should play a leading role to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals,” he added.

Founding members of the Consortium include the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and the American Geophysical Union (AGU).

The Consortium will provide research- and evidence-based resources for addressing issues of sexual harassment to other professional organizations. These resources will include model policies and procedures to use to combat issues of harassment, including policies for meeting and awards and honors. Each of the 53 member groups will contribute to the development of the model policies.

ASM will serve on the Leadership Council, a small group of the Consortium's inaugural members. The Leadership Council's members are recognized for their important contributions, including guiding the Consortium’s resources and deliverables to advance the goal of creating a community committed to changing the culture and climate in STEMM societies and the field.

ASM is the largest single life science society, composed of more than 32,000 scientists and health professionals. ASM's mission is to promote and advance the microbial sciences.
