Nov. 23, 2020

Washington, D.C. – November 23, 2020 - ASM CEO Stefano Bertuzzi and ASM President Victor DiRita have penned an editorial, published , calling for the scientific community to begin planning for major changes to the scientific research system post- COVID-19 that will significantly alter its foundation.

Drs. Bertuzzi and DiRita draw upon principles of Vannevar Bush’s landmark report in Science (published 75 years ago) and call for a new foundation of the scientific research system that will:

•    Prioritize open science, open data, open access. Encourage integration and collaboration among disciplines and professional societies
•    Include basic biology and medical research as fundamental to national security
•    Improve and enhance science education and training, leading to a more diverse workforce that reflects society
