ASM Announces CDC-Funded Genomic Surveillance Training Program
°®¶¹´«Ã½ has been awarded funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to offer training on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). ASM will develop and deliver accredited training to educate the clinical microbiology workforce on NGS technology, to increase pathogen genomic sequencing capacity and increase preparedness for the next pandemic through enhanced molecular techniques. It will also educate ASM’s bioinformatics partners on infectious diseases, to enhance their understanding of the science and the technology’s impact on public health.
Genomic surveillance of emerging pathogens using NGS is a critical component of public health. Clinical microbiology laboratories are considered “sentinel” laboratories since the primary encounter almost always occurs in a clinical setting. ASM’s training will cover the science of NGS, applications, analysis, reporting, opportunities, challenges and connections to public health. An NGS Scientific Advisory Working Group of clinical microbiology and public health laboratory directors and bioinformaticians will advise on course curriculum, content and faculty.
ASM supports laboratories, hospitals and academic centers throughout the U.S. and around the globe with its expertise, membership offerings, certifications, listservs, training platforms, meetings and conferences, industry engagement and stakeholder partnerships.
