ASM Selects Honorees for 2025 Awards and Prize Program

Washington, D.C.—°®¶¹´«Ã½ (ASM) announced the recipients of its 2025 Awards and Prize Program. The awards recognize leading scientists and researchers in the field for their professional accomplishments and contributions to research, education, clinical laboratories, service and scientific diversity.

The American Academy of °®¶¹´«Ã½, the honorific leadership group and scientific think tank within ASM, manages a program of awards and a prize that highlight outstanding science at every career level and subdiscipline of the microbial sciences. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee from a competitive, peer-nominated list of candidates.

“The ASM Awards and Prize Program recognizes microbiologists who have made significant contributions to advancing the microbial sciences,” said ASM CEO Stefano Bertuzzi. “Nominating a mentor or colleague to be honored for their remarkable work is a good way to show gratitude for their efforts.” 

The 2025 recipients are:
  • ASM Lifetime Achievement Award: Susan Weiss, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
  • ASM Award for Applied and Biotechnological Research: Richard Marconi, Ph.D., Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.
  • ASM Award for Basic Research: Yuan Chang, M.D., University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
  • ASM Award for Early Career Applied and Biotechnological Research: Anne Wyllie, Ph.D., Yale University School of Public Health.
  • ASM Award for Early Career Basic Research: César de la Fuente, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania.
  • ASM Award for Early Career Clinical °®¶¹´«Ã½ Research: Nischay Mishra, Ph.D., Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
  • ASM Award for Early Career Environmental Research: Jasna Kovac, Ph.D., The Pennsylvania State University.
  • ASM Award for Environmental Research: Martin Wiedmann, Dr. Med. Vet., Ph.D., Cornell University.
  • ASM Award for Graduate Education: George O’Toole, Ph.D., Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine.
  • ASM Award for Research or Leadership in Clinical °®¶¹´«Ã½: Benjamin Pinsky, M.D., Ph.D., Stanford University School of Medicine.
  • ASM Award for Service: Melissa Miller, Ph.D., D(ABMM), FAAM, University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
  • ASM Alice C. Evans Award for Advancement of Women: Suchetana Mukhopadhyay, Ph.D., Indiana University Bloomington.
  • ASM Carski Award for Undergraduate Education: Davida Smyth, Ph.D., Texas A&M University, San Antonio.
  • ASM D.C. White Award for Interdisciplinary Research: Nicole Dubilier, Ph.D., Max Planck Institute for Marine °®¶¹´«Ã½.
  • ASM Elizabeth O. King Lecturer Award: Natalie J. Thornburg, Ph.D. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • ASM Honorary Diversity Lecturer Award: Ighovwerha Ofotokun, M.D., Emory University School of Medicine.
  • ASM Microbiome Data Prize: Simon Roux, Ph.D., Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
  • ASM Moselio Schaechter Award in Recognition of a Developing-Country Microbiologist: Paul Brown, Ph.D., The University of the West Indies.
  • ASM Scherago-Rubin Award for Clinical °®¶¹´«Ã½: Carol Young, MLS(ASCP), University of Michigan Health.
  • ASM William A. Hinton Award for Advancement of a Diverse Community of Microbiologists: Musau WaKabongo, Ph.D., Dr. Musau WaKabongo Science Education, Inc.
