Ayana Scott-Elliston, MS, is a graduate student at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, a biological sciences teaching assistant, and an active member of the Black Microbiologists Association. Her research focuses on the role of diet in the interplay between the gastrointestinal bacterial composition and the physiology of Lithobates sylvaticus, wood frogs, to evaluate the potential role of gut bacteria’s metabolites on growth, development, and immune function. In addition, she is evaluating methods to translate her research into curricula for K-12. She completed her undergraduate training at University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and she completed her Masters degree at Virginia Commonwealth University.
