Ben Allen is the User Science Support Lead for the Department of Energy Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase)—a research platform for systems biology—at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Allen’s role focuses on advancing the scientific output of the KBase user community, organizing training and engagement activities and supporting research efforts of the DOE Biological and Environmental Research program. Since 2014, he has worked with the KBase team, alongside staff at the DOE Joint Genome Institute and the National Microbiome Data Collaborative, to support multi-omics research across national laboratories, universities and research institutes.
He supports research by developing strategy for user science, analyzing user publications, building training materials, creating technical documentation, writing scientific protocols and engaging in research collaborations to advance the use of the KBase platform and DOE BER resources. Prior to working at ORNL in the Computational and Predictive Biology Group of BSD, Allen was an academic coordinator at the UT-ORNL Bredesen Center for the Energy Science and Engineering graduate program.
