University of Maryland, College Park
John Buchner, Ph.D., is in his 11th year teaching at the University of Maryland, where he focuses on a non-majors microbiology class (co-taught with Dr. Erin Tran), a majors microbiology class (co-taught with Dr. Dan Stein) and a teaching internship. He is interested in the best practices in teaching. Buchner has helped organize the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators. His favorite measure of teaching success is using concept inventories to measure learning gains.
Before coming to the University of Maryland, he worked at the University of California San Diego with Susan Golden. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, working with Anna Karls. Though he has never swum a competitive race in his life, he's a certified referee, starter and stroke and turn judge for swimming to support his kid's swim club.
