ASM Statement on Sweeping Removal of Federal Agency Staff
ASM is appalled by the systematic attempts by the Trump Administration to destroy the research infrastructure of the °®¶¹´«Ã½ States and undermine our global leadership. This system pays enormous dividends in health for the country and the world and is an economic engine of ingenuity.Ensuring the nation’s health and continuing America’s leading role in scientific advancement requires strong, steady leadership. The recent Executive Orders, combined with compulsory and voluntary staff reductions, are already causing disruptions in lifesaving research around the country. This additional blow to science agencies in eliminating scientific leadership and the wholesale removal of federal agency staff will be catastrophic for American science and technology. ASM stands in strong support of all the scientific and support staff across all scientific agencies.
ASM asks the Trump Administration to consider the impact on the health of all Americans. The “brain drain” that will inevitably follow these actions will detrimentally impact the long-standing position of the U.S. as a leader in biomedical breakthroughs and will have significant negative health and economic effects.
