Importance of Diagnostic Networks to Ensure Equitable Access to Clinical °®¶¹´«Ã½ Services

Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024

10-11 a.m. U.S. ET/ 3-4 p.m. GMT

Hear Heidi Albert, Ph.D., MPH and Joel Manyahi, M.D., Ph.D. discuss equitable access to clinical microbiology services and strengthening diagnostic systems.

Infectious diseases continue to disproportionately cause millions of deaths and disabilities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Acute respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS, diarrhea, malaria, tuberculosis and bacterial AMR are the most frequent causes of infectious disease mortality in LMICs. Timely and effective diagnosis and treatment of infections, detection of emerging infections and access to enhanced clinical microbiology services are paramount.

An integral component for control and prevention of infectious diseases in LMICs is ensuring there are effective, accessible diagnostic networks in place. However, many LMICs do not have optimized laboratory networks for clinical microbiology, and sample referral systems may cater solely to major disease programs, such as TB and HIV, missing an opportunity to support accessible and timely clinical microbiology testing to inform patient management. This presentation will focus on diagnostic system considerations in delivering equitable access to clinical microbiology services and use of diagnostic network mapping and optimization analysis to inform integrated diagnostic system strengthening interventions.

Preparing for Surge Laboratory Capacity in the Event of an Outbreak

Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023

11 a.m.-12 p.m. U.S. ET/ 3-4 p.m. GMT

The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated gaps and weaknesses of health systems, particularly laboratory microbiology capabilities and capacity. While tremendous resources have since been mobilized and deployed to strengthen preparedness and response for future pandemics, disparities remain, particularly in many laboratories in low- and middle-income countries. Dr. Andre Abreu and Dr. Afreenish Amir shared their perspectives and strategies for ensuring their respective country’s approaches to surge capacity planning.
