mSystems Editor in Chief

Position Overview

ASM is inviting applications for Editor in Chief of ®, our multidisciplinary open-access journal publishing preeminent work in microbial systems biology. The successful candidate, beginning their initial term on July 1, 2025, will play a pivotal role in advancing the journal's legacy of publishing important biological and biochemical findings drawn from analyses of large data sets, as well as new computational approaches for deriving these findings, to achieve insights into metabolic and regulatory systems at the scale of both the single cell and microbial communities.

Journal of Virology Editors

Position Overview

The Journal of Virology® () welcomes virologists (Ph.D. or equivalent) from across the globe to apply and join our . The initial term for this position begins on July 1, 2024. JVI publishes new knowledge about the viruses of animals, archaea, bacteria, fungi, plants and protozoa. Investigators in all areas of basic, applied and translational virology are invited to submit manuscripts on topics important for virologists and society in general. 

We are looking for individuals with broad expertise in fundamental and applied virology to cater to the of JVI and are specifically seeking editors in these areas: hepatitis viruses; retroviruses, ERVs, lentiviruses, HTLV; flaviviruses and (re-)emerging arboviruses viruses; viral oncogenesis, particularly related to hepatitis and retrovirus infection.

Commitment

Journal of Virology Minireview/Gem Editors

The Journal of Virology® (JVI) welcomes virologists (Ph.D. or equivalent) to apply to join as Editors. ® (CMR) welcomes ASM members who have a Ph.D. and experience in parasitology or a broad range of experience in general microbiology for the open editor positions. We are looking for senior investigators (e.g., associate or full professor, government research scientist or administrator in any employment sector).

CMR is a top-ranked journal publishing authoritative narrative reviews on all subjects within clinical microbiology. Joining the board of editors allows the opportunity to help guide the direction of the journal and provide topical, comprehensive resources to the research community. 

Commitment:

Position Overview

The ASM/ESCMID Joint Conference on Drug Development to Meet the Challenge of Antimicrobial Resistance Program Committee is responsible for organizing the scientific program. Co-sponsored by ASM and the European Society for Clinical 爱豆传媒 and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), this multidisciplinary conference highlights the challenges, opportunities and current requirements for antimicrobial drug development to address antimicrobial resistance. The ASM Meetings Department seeks to fill the position of 2 program committee members.

Commitment 

  • 2-year term, non-renewable: 2023-2024 term begins in November 2022.
  • 1-2 hours for monthly conference calls.
  • 8-10 hours annually for speaker outreach and session development.
  • 4-6 hours annually for abstract review and scheduling.   
  • Participant in virtual planning meeting (4 hours).  
  • Attend conference in Boston on September 19-22, 2023.   

Responsibilities and Expectations  

  • Develop and schedule the scientific program for the conference.
  • Identity session topics, invite speakers, develop session content and convene sessions at meeting.
  • Review, select and schedule abstracts in accordance with guidelines.

ASM Microbe Program Committee Co-Chair (Basic Science)

Position Overview

ASM Microbe drives discovery, innovation and collaboration across the full spectrum of microbiology. Be a part of the community making an impact on the intersections of science, industry and policy.
 
The ASM Microbe Program Committee Co-Chairs are responsible for organizing the scientific program and communicating with the committee members. One co鈥恈hair has clinical training in microbial sciences, while the other provides basic science expertise to balance the needs of the committee. Terms are staggered for consistency. The ASM Meetings Department seeks to fill the position of 1 program committee co-chair with oversight of the basic science tracks.  

Commitment 

  • 2-year term, non-renewable; 2023-2024 term begins in June 2022.
  • 1-3 hours monthly for conference calls.
  • 20-25 hours annually for program development oversight and committee management.
  • 10-15 hours annually for abstract and award review. 
  • 2 annual meetings: virtual planning meeting (6 hours—Aug.) and on-site planning meeting at ASM Microbe (8-10 hours—June).

  • Serve as a thought leader and content expert for the program committee to ensure integrity of the scientific program. 
  • Collaborate with clinical co-chair on all responsibilities.
  • Oversee the basic science tracks and provide guidance and support to track leaders.

  • Oversee the review, selection and scheduling of abstracts and travel awards in accordance with guidelines. 
  • Monitor performance levels within the program committee and provide coaching to assist members in achieving expectations. 
  • Assign committee members to ad hoc assignments.

ABRCMS Abstract Reviewer

The seeks abstract reviewers in to lend their expertise selecting student abstracts to be presented at one of the nation’s leading STEM conferences for scientists from minoritized populations.

Commitment

  • Abstract reviews take place asynchronously over 4 days in September.
  • Expect to spend approximately 8 hours reviewing abstracts.

Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Reviewers can expect to review approximately 25 abstracts.
  • The review process is conducted asynchronously through an online portal.

Eligibility

  • Must be a postdoctoral scientist, research faculty member or research scientist.
  • Individuals are required to be active researchers, who spends at least 25% of their time doing research in one of the .
  • ASM membership is not required.

Application Process

  • To indicate willingness to serve as an ABRCMS reviewer, please complete the ABRCMS Reviewer Intent Form by Aug. 30, 2021.
  • Potential reviewers will be asked to confirm their availability in early September.
  • Selected reviewers will receive assignments mid-September.

ASMCUE Microbrew Chair
The ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) Planning Committee is responsible for overall strategy and implementation of the meeting. The committee seeks to fill the position of Microbrew Chair. A microbrew is a short talk (15 minutes) about newly developed teaching tips or tools.

Commitment: 

  • 3-year term starting Oct. 2021, non-renewable.  
  • 2-5 hour time commitment per month.

Responsibilities and Expectations: 

  • Identify and recruit ad hoc reviewers for microbrews in accordance with guidelines. 
  • Lead planning meeting and follow through with members. 
  • Review and finalize microbrews in accordance with guidelines. 
  • Participate in planning committee meetings and follow through on assignments. 
  • Assist the committee and ASM staff as needed. 

Eligibility: 

  • Current ASM membership 
  • Prior experience as an abstract reviewer for society conferences (i.e., ASMCUE, ABRCMS, ASM Microbe), preferably for content related to teaching and learning. 
  • Attendance at ASMCUE within the past 3 years.
